JV1 Beats Bedford to Go 3-0 On the Season
The JV1 squad continues to find ways to win tight games, and earned a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Bedford at a Saturday matinee. Hanover got off to a quick start as Ian Press played Veer Patel through in the third minute. Press was taken down, but the official called advantage and Patel narrowly missed a shot across the face of the goal. Bedford threatened in the ninth minute, but Christian Blix was hot off his line and cleared a ball with a striker in his face. Soren Stettenheim came close to scoring in the 24th minute, volleying a cross from Aidan Bradley just wide. Stettenheim was back at it in the 29th minute. Henry Werner chipped a cheeky ball into space for the lanky alum of the Triangle of Death, but after Stettenheim beat the goalie, he was unable to finish. Hanover finally broke through in the 32nd minute, thanks to the same attacking combo. Werner's corner kick found Stettenheim, who volleyed home for a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however. Bedford tied the game five minutes later when the Bedford right winger hit a shot from outside the box that dipped under the bar and found the far side netting. Not to be outdone, Hanover, was able to regain the advantage just before halftime. Sam Calderwood took a quick throw-in and Ian Press was able to force a turnover by the goalkeeper and give his team a 2-1 lead.
The second half was closely contested but scoreless, and Bedford had several opportunities to tie the game. Hanover goalkeeper Wyatt Seelig gobbled up a free kick from 25 yards out 11 minutes after the interval, and 10 minutes before the end of the match a Bedford shot just missed to the right. Hanover had their chances as well. Jospeh Rudd, ever so close to his driver's license, ran onto a ball and had a good first-time crack. With time running out, Bedford had one more opportunity when a mixup at midfield gave the Bulldogs a break. Seelig was quick off his line and met the striker at the 18, deflecting the ball out of bounds for a harmless throw.
Hanover is now 3-0 on the season and will prepare for two ambitious road games to play two of Vermont's best at the end of the week with a Tuesday road trip to Keene.
