JV2 Plays Well in 4-1 Loss to Cardigan

The Hanover JV2 Boys kicked off their 5th match of the 21/22 season looking to bounce back from last weekend's heartbreaking late loss to Hartford.

Hanover started the match with purpose and put the ball deep in Cardigan's half early and often. Junior Theo Joseph, making his debut after a week sidelined due to a "skateboard related incident", had the game's first chance. Theo found space between his opposing center-backs before his close-range shot was smothered by a last-ditch tackle. Finn Duncan, quickly proving himself as a footballer, had the next chance as he paced through Cardigan's defense at the half-way line, but a heavy touch gave just enough of a chance for Cardigan's keeper to snatch-up the ball. Twenty minutes gone, still 0-0.

The next five minutes saw Cardigan finally find some space in Hanover's half. After some hard-fought midfield play, their nifty-number-nine managed to get on the end of a looping effort just before the diving hands of Iver Skogerboe, and he finished with a lovely chipped effort to the far post. 1-0 Cardigan. Hanover battled back for the remainder of the half and found some good chances from the feet of Junior veteran Simon Taenzer. Taenzer danced his way to the left base-line and cut the ball back, but his cross was well-cut-out by the Cardigan defense.

The second half began much-like the first, Hanover working the ball deep into the Cardigan half but unable to find an end-product. Patrick Donegan then came on to the pitch and sparked the match with an excellent 10 minutes that saw Donegan hit the post, glance a header just wide of the goal and have a close-range effort smothered by the Cardigan keeper. Just as Hanover looked to score, Cardigan came bouncing back with an excellent five minutes of their own. First a perfectly-timed through ball unlocked the Hanover Defense before that nifty-number-nine came streaming down the left-flank to meet it and chip another wonderful finish into the far-post. 2-0 Cardigan. Hanover were put right back under pressure from kick off and a long-looping ball bounced in Hanover's box before an unfortunate tangle of legs conceded a penalty to Cardigan. Number 9 stepped up to the spot and slotted away his hat trick.

Finally, the momentum swayed back to Hanover and two promising attacks earned the home side a free-kick from 25 yards out. Wyatt Seelig took the responsibility and absolutely belted the ball into the upper-right corner, a wonderful finish to get a goal back for the home-side.
Cardigan managed enough energy for one final attack before the whistle and after a scrum in the Hanover box,  poked the ball home for their fourth and final of the match.

The JV2s are right back in action Thursday, with a 4:30 game at Woodsville.  No early dismissal, but the bus will leave right after school at 3:00.
