JV2 Plays Great Defense in 3-0 Win Over Hartford

Hanover met Hartford for the third time this season. The first was a 3-0 win for the JV2 boys in early September. The second was a hard-fought 2-1 loss. Both games saw Hanover take a majority of the possession and shots, but Saturday morning at Dresden was a little different.

Hartford won the coin-toss and started with the ball. They would then keep the ball for the next thirty minutes, stalled by an occasional foray in the Hartford half by Hanover. The JV2 boys were smart to defend as a team deep in their half and managed to repel most of Hartford's chances. The few shots that managed to get through central defenders Kevin Chou and Paul Ashton were either parrier or caught by young, veteran keeper Iver Skogerboe.

Just after the 30 minute mark efforts on the left flank from Blake Bouchard and Simon Taenzer, linked by midfield handyman Trevor, managed to win a series of corner kicks for their team. The third corner of the series was headed away by Hartford, just to be sent right back into the box to an awaiting Taenzer who flicked the ball with the back of his head over the reaching arms of Hartford's keeper from 12 yards out, 1-0. Hanover's half-hour of defending rewarded with a lead against the run of play. The last 5 minutes of the half were far more contested, either team winning a series of 50/50's in the midfield before the whistle blew.

The second half began same as the first, Hartford had an attacking barrage that lasted the first fifteen minutes, before Jason Adinortey broke through on Hartford's goal after a botched clearance, only to be stopped by a good tackle by the last defender. Jason's effort seemed to spark the team though. Sophomore midfielder Wyatt Seelig had several good looks at goal as well as effective link-up play with Striker, Alex Brackett. Hanover's second goal came after a few minutes of pressure down the right flank from Patrick Donegan and Bouchard which started the move. The pair eventually won a throw-in high up the field. Hartford's clearance was high but only reached the top of the 18, where Brackett settled with an excellent first touch before side-footing it into the bottom left corner, 2-0. Hanover's next attack was almost directly from Hartford's kickoff and Wyatt Seelig found himself between Hartford's defenders with the ball at his feet, he slotted it past the keeper into the bottom right corner for Hanover's second goal in about as many minutes. 3-0.

Having played a furious 5 minutes the boys were visibly more tired, though with just twenty minutes to play and a decently sized bench of four, they dropped back deeper to defend and contested every possible ball. It's a difficult, but important job. Their final twenty minutes of hard work saw the Hanover JV2 boys earn their fourth win of the season, and fifth shutout!
